RULES OF PROPER SAUNA USE
Proper sauna use is a set of desired behaviors in sauna and surrounding facilities where we take sauna baths, whether in our own sauna or in a sauna center. These behaviors affect our health and help achieve maximum benefits from sauna bathing. Before using sauna baths, it is essential to ensure you have no health contraindications. Proper sauna use requires observing the following rules, unless the center's regulations, which must be followed, state otherwise:
Sauna baths should be used at least once a week, dedicating a minimum of one and a half hours (optimally two hours). The sauna should not be used hurriedly; remember, it is relaxation.
During sauna use, we should perform at least two cycles (optimally three cycles), each consisting of three phases:
- heating the body (sauna bath),
- cooling the body (shower, pool, etc.),
- rest.
Before entering the saunarium, we should:
- avoid overeating, do not eat a heavy meal two hours before,
- take care of physiological needs,
- undress completely and remove all jewelry, watches, and other body decorations,
- wash the entire body thoroughly with water and soap in the shower and dry completely.
Before each entry into the sauna/steam room, we should:
- dry the entire body thoroughly,
- warm feet in hot water if they are cold,
- remove slippers.
When staying in a dry sauna room, we should:
- choose the bench according to our needs and possibilities, preferably starting from the lowest and ending at the highest,
- unwrap from the towel so that the largest surface of the body is exposed to temperature and moisture,
- sit and keep legs at torso level or lie down on the bench,
- place a towel under every part of the body in contact with the sauna wood,
- monitor time to not stay in the sauna longer than 15 minutes,
- sit down briefly before leaving the sauna if you were lying down.
When staying in a steam room, we should:
- rinse the seat and footrest with water from the hose available in the steam room immediately after entering,
- sit or lie completely naked on the tiled seat,
- rinse the seat and footrest with water from the hose available in the steam room just before leaving.
After leaving the sauna/steam room, we should:
- rinse sweat off the body with warm water,
- cool the body with a cold shower, remembering to start cooling from the parts of the body furthest from the heart, with cooling of the neck and head recommended at the end,
- after the shower, if possible, use a water container or ice grotto to cool the body thoroughly,
- rest for at least as long as you stayed in the sauna, preferably lying down,
- replenish fluids.
Before leaving the saunarium, we should:
- extend the last rest to a minimum of 15-20 minutes,
- wash the entire body thoroughly but without soap,
- if possible, disinfect the feet.
In addition to these rules, sauna culture rules should also be followed here.
